| Summer 2008
The Musica Salon Ensemble ( string quartet,
bass and piano) will be giving 2 performances
of “Musica Plays for Fun” -
a light-hearted nod to the Classics, with
some detours on the way. The program will
feature “Summer” as portrayed
by Vivaldi and Gershwin, South American
melodies by Mozart (from his forgotten tour
of Argentina), Haydn (he had lapses too!)
and romantic pieces by Velazquez and Marchetti,
perfect for hot sultry nights.
The concerts which are free and open to
the public, are on Wednesday, August. 20
at 7:30pm in the Assembly Hall of Carol
Woods Retirement Community, 750 Weaver Dairy
Rd. Chapel Hill. It will be repeated on
Tuesday, August 26 at 7pm in the Ponder
Auditorium of Croasdaile Village Community,
2600 Croasdaile Farm Parkway, Durham.

During our 20th anniversary celebrations,
Musica musicians, together with local college
students, raised over $2500 in several concerts
for the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra
which lost much equipment and sheet music
in Hurricane Katrina.
In 2007, the Musica String Quartet was
invited to be the Artists-in-Residence for
Chapel Hill’s Horace Williams House
Concert Series. We performed several concerts,
including the “English Concert”,
a ramble through the musical byways of England
and Wales. It featured works by Vaughan
Williams, “The Lark Ascending”,
“Fantasia on a theme of Tallis”,
Britten’s “Simple Symphony”,
Elgar’s “Chanson de Matin”,
Frank Bridges’s Idylls, Welsh Traditional
Songs, and a Lincolnshire Song arranged
by Jeremy Nurse.
A concert in the late spring on the lawn,
the “Jazzical’ concert, featured
compositions by Scott Joplin, Duke Ellington,
George Gershwin, G. Cobb, M. Willson, Signorelli,
and arrangements by Schiff of Mozart’s
G minor Symphony and Faure’s Sicilienne.
This concert was repeated at Carol Woods
Retirement Community later that year and
brought back many memories for the audience.
In December, we played in the Chapel Hill
Museum for the Christmas House Tour with
a varied program – Corelli’s
Christmas Concerto, Borodin’s “Nocturne”,
Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto #2, Vivaldi’s
Concerto in A minor, F1 #177 and “Winter”
